What CNC machining covers

Milling is the workhorse of precision manufacturing: a rotating cutter removes material from a fixed block until the part in the drawing comes out of it. That covers a huge range of work — flat plates with a bolt pattern, pockets and bosses in a housing, complex contoured surfaces, slots, threads and counterbores. If your part starts as a solid block, plate or extrusion and needs faces, holes or features cut into it, it is a milling job. How KALIV evaluates a machining job

When a drawing or model comes in, the first pass is practical: what material, what overall size, how many setups it will take to reach every feature, and which callouts are actually tight. Most parts carry a handful of critical dimensions and a lot of forgiving ones, and knowing which is which drives everything — including which partner shop should run it. We also look for the traps: thin walls that flex under a cutter, deep pockets that need long reach, features that force an extra setup. If something on the drawing adds cost without adding function, we say so before quoting, because a small print change is often the cheapest improvement a part can get.

How the right shop gets picked

Machine shops are not interchangeable, and pretending they are is how parts end up late or wrong. Some shops excel at small tight-tolerance aluminum work; others at large steel plates; others at fussy thin-wall parts or exotic materials. Sourcing is the skill KALIV sells: reading the part, knowing the network, and placing the job where the equipment, the track record and the current capacity match it. You never have to audition machine shops, compare capabilities you cannot verify, or discover mid-job that a vendor was the wrong fit — that risk and that legwork are what you hand to us with the drawing.

Materials

Aluminum is the bread and butter of machined parts — it cuts fast, holds tolerance well and covers most housings, plates, fixtures and brackets. Steels and stainless carry the parts that need strength, wear resistance or weldability; they cut slower and harder on tooling, which shows in the quote but not in the result. Engineering plastics — Delrin, UHMW, nylon, polycarbonate and their relatives — serve wear pads, insulators, guides and corrosion-prone applications. If you are not sure what the part should be made of, describe the job it does; material selection is a conversation we have before anything is placed, and the network means no material forces a compromise vendor.

Tolerances, inspection and being right

Every part is held to its drawing — that is the whole contract of machining, and it is written into how KALIV places work. The drawing travels with its critical dimensions flagged, first articles are inspected and approved before a production run continues, and measured results come back with the parts, not instead of them. The honest rule on tolerances applies across any shop: tighter costs more, because it slows the cut and adds measurement time. One-offs and production move through different doors. For a quick turn, the priority is calendar time — quote fast, place fast, ship fast, sometimes with the partner chosen mostly for available capacity this week. For production, the priority is repeatability and per-part economics: setup and programming are one-time costs spread across every piece, so the job goes where it can run efficiently at volume and stay there. We are clear about which mode a job is in, and a part can graduate: the Friday-five prototype run and the five-hundred-piece production order are the same drawing handled with different strategies, each priced the way it is actually run.

What drives machining cost

Five things move a machining quote more than anything else. Material — what it is and how much gets cut away. Setups — every re-fixturing to reach new features adds time. Tolerances — tight callouts slow machines and add inspection. Complexity — more features means more toolpaths and program time. And quantity — one-time costs amortize, so per-part price falls as the run grows. The network adds a sixth lever in your favor: competition and fit. A job placed where it runs naturally is cheaper than the same job forced through the wrong shop, and comparing placements is part of every KALIV quote rather than something you would have to do yourself.

Timelines, and what moves them

Machining lead time is mostly queue time plus material time — the cutting itself is usually hours. A part in a common aluminum alloy, quoted from a complete drawing, moves fastest. Exotic materials and outside processing like anodize or plating add their own calendars. The network helps here in a way a single shop cannot: when one shop is buried, another has capacity, so your job is not hostage to any one schedule. When a date is genuinely hard, say so at quoting — knowing the real deadline is what lets us place the job somewhere that can honestly meet it, and if a date cannot be met, you hear that up front.

What to send for a quote

The ideal package is a 3D model — STEP is the standard — plus a 2D drawing carrying tolerances, material and finish callouts, plus the quantity and the date you need parts in hand. The model tells the shape; the drawing tells what matters about the shape. A drawing alone works. A sample part can work too — measuring an existing part and producing a proper drawing from it is a normal way for a legacy component to re-enter production, and once that drawing exists it belongs to you.
